LHS Football Team Shares their Bench with a Buddy

On Friday, October 27th, 5th grader Matthew Noonan joined the Ludlow High School football team on the sidelines, as they battled Drury High School (North Adams) on the Ludlow High School field.  Matt cashed in his PBIS cub coins last month for the opportunity to be a varsity bench buddy for one LHS football game.

The PBIS Rewards Program (implemented in 2012) is based on students displaying PRIDE, both when at school and outside of school.  The purpose of this school-wide initiative is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm. When a student displays these qualities they earn cub coins which then can be cashed in for various rewards on a monthly basis. PRIDE represents: Positive attitude - Respect self others and property -Individual responsibility -Do your best - Everyone learns.

With the enthusiasm of a winning quarterback, Matt spoke about his time on the football field, "It was a really fun and cool experience, the whole team made me feel welcome, and a part of the team. I was able to call plays and encourage them in the huddle. I was surrounded by all these big players and they were listening to me. To break up the huddle I would say...on 3, 1-2-3 and they would say - LIONS, then I would say on 6, 4-5-6  and they would say - FAMILY. I'm definitely going to do it again."

“As a coaching staff we truly appreciate the partnership with the bench buddies program,” stated Ray Saloio, LHS Football Coach. “We want our program to have a positive influence on the community.  One of the great things we witnessed last week was that our captains went right up and welcomed Matt without any urging, and other players followed suit.”  

Melissa Knowles, Veteran Park Principal, reflected on being able to offer this opportunity to Veterans Park students, “This is a win, win-- Matt experienced the thrill of being part of a varsity football game and the players have the opportunity to positively inspire and influence younger students.  We are thankful for this partnership with the football players and coaches - resulting in a memorable experience for Matt.”

And for those of you wondering… much to the delight of their fans  the Ludlow Lions football team, and their bench buddy, claimed a 34-8 victory!
