UMass Band Day 2017
UMass Band Day 2017

Thirty-seven LHS students attended the 43rd annual Multiband Pops Homecoming Concert recently held at the UMass Fine Arts Center on October 19th and 17 LHS Band members participated in the 33rd annual Band Day at UMass Amherst on October 28th.

The Mulitband Pops Homecoming concert is an annual event put on by the UMass Department of Music and Dance that showcases 15 performing ensembles in a two hour concert.  Students in attendance were treated to performances by the UMass symphony band, wind ensemble, orchestra, jazz ensembles, percussion ensemble, jazz vocal group, chamber ensembles and the 400 member UMass Minuteman Marching Band.  In addition, they also were able to attend a modern dance performance as well as performances by the UMass color guard and majorettes.

According to Kevin McAvoy, LHS Band Director,  “This event is a wonderful opportunity for students to see a bit of the UMASS campus and hear some of the talent being fostered there.   The University has a strong music program that many Ludlow graduates have been a part of over the years.”

McAvoy shared that Madeleine Pereira (LHS class of 2017) currently plays bassoon in the UMass Symphony Band and Brandon Nowakowski (LHS class of 2014) plays the alto saxophone in the UMass Wind Ensemble.

“It was a real treat for the Ludlow students to see a former LHS band members on stage performing alongside some of the University's finest musicians and it showed what is possible with dedication and hard work,” continued McAvoy.

During the annual band day event approximately 2000 band students from 58 schools from all over New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania rehearsed together in the morning to prepare for an impressive halftime performance during the UMass vs. Appalachian State football game held at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

After the intense rehearsal the combined, eclectic band performed three classic Beatles tunes from the Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album including: It's a Hard Day's Night, Twist and Shout and the title track; Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band.  McAvoy noted that it is the 50th anniversary of the Sgt. Pepper’s album (See video below).

“This event is a lot of fun for all of the high school band participants.  It also gives them a chance to experience the thrill of performing in front of a college audience,” said McAvoy. “Students also had the opportunity to meet and work with UMass Minuteman Marching Band director Dr. Timothy Anderson and Associate Director Thomas P. Hannum.”

“Our students had a fantastic time at each of these events," said McAvoy, “and are already looking forward to going again next year!”
