On March 5th, the College Board hosted an AP Day at State Houses across the country to encourage students and teachers to share their success stories with legislators in order to advocate for the benefits of Advanced Placement courses.
LHS English teachers, Charlie Cangemi and Chris Rea brought nineteen junior and senior AP English students to the event. Students were able to meet with legislators and share stories, emphasizing the difference that AP classes make in students' lives.
According to Rea, students were given the opportunity to engage directly in the political process, as they visited senators' and representatives' offices to ask for support with upcoming legislation that aims to help low-income students with exam fees and ensure that students who earn passing scores are given college credit at state schools.
During the event Lieutenant Governor, Karyn Polito, shared words of gratitude and support to students before taking a large group photo with approximately 150 students in attendance, State Senator Joanne Comerford Tweeted out her support and LHS student, Jenn Kania, was interviewed at the State House by 22 News.
