Recently LHS Class of 2021 School Counselor Emily Connelly welcomed forty-eight seniors to LHS to receive the 2020 Junior Book Awards. Connelly explained that typically a ceremony is held at the end of their junior year acknowledging these achievements, but due to the pandemic the school counseling department planned an alternative for this year’s recipients.
Specific colleges/universities sponsor the Junior Book Awards given to high school school juniors each year who excel in the classroom, demonstrate leadership qualities, demonstrate a love of reading and contribute to their school community.
Awards include a book and certificate or letter, with some also including the potential of scholarship money and/or application fee waivers.
Each specific award has unique eligibility requirements established by the sponsoring college/university, including: being recognized for high academic achievement, demonstration of leadership ability or devoted significant time to community service. Some colleges also stipulate that recipients have expressed an interest in pursuing a particular field of study in college.
Recipients are chosen by a committee that includes LHS faculty, administration, and school counselors. Committee members carefully choose students that meet the criteria for each of the specific, individual awards.
