Christopher Drewniak, a member of Ludlow High School’s Class of 2011, recently received one of three Everyday Hero Awards presented by the National Down Syndrome Congress (NDSC). The three recipients of this prestigious award were chosen from nominations submitted from across the country.
According to the NDSC the award is given to self-advocates with Down Syndrome who speak up, make their own decisions, seek the help of others to support them in their journey, and through self-determination, accomplish positive impacts on their lives and their community.
This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NDSC also wanted to highlight honorees who worked in essential positions of employment supporting us all during this challenging time; which is exactly what Chris did, and continues to do.
Big Y sent a letter to employees shortly after the pandemic began informing them to contact their supervisor if they did not feel safe working. The letter also stated employees could return to work when they felt it was safe.
Chris made the decision to continue working while taking precautions such as wearing a mask and gloves.
“I felt I had to go to work to help my store and customers, even after getting a letter from my store saying that I didn't have to work if I didn't feel safe," shared Chris.
Not only has Chris worked his weekly scheduled shift during the pandemic, but from time to time, at the request of his supervisor, he has also worked beyond the end of shift and on his days off.
LHS Principal, Lisa Nemeth said she often sees Chris when shopping at Big Y and is extremely proud of his work ethic and professionalism; which is why she was not surprised to learn of him receiving the NSDC honor.
“Much like his time spent with us at Ludlow High, Chris continues to be a hard worker with such a focused, positive, friendly attitude,” said Nemeth. “As a principal there is nothing that makes me prouder than seeing our students be successful in life. This is a well deserved honor for Chris.”
CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS!
